The controversial plans to increase probate fees have been put on hold. In light of the snap general election in June of this year, the Ministry of Justice have advised that there is not enough time push the changes through Parliamentary review.
For the time being, the probate fee will remain the same at £155 for professional applications; £215 for lay applications.
The fees were due to raise on a sliding scale starting from £300 up to fees as high as £20,000, depending on the size of the estate.
The hold on these fees is obviously great news for clients dealing with probate right now. However, although these plans have been put on hold for now, we would strongly advise that clients keep in mind that is likely to be a debate picked up again later this year.
We will keep you advised on this.
